Anubis like many gods where created in the image of how they were thought to look. However the image was what they believed the Gods appearance would be . Not what they knew by sight to be true. The reason behind the head like jackal or form of a black jackal was based on what ancient Egyptians observed as guardians. Dog like jackals where found often haunting the edge of deserts.
